If your gaming table has a baize (felt) playing surface, you’ll know how satisfying it is to play on a clean, smooth surface. Baize can collect crumbs, dust, pet hair, and the odd tea ring if you’re not careful, but with a bit of gentle care, you can keep it looking good for years.
Here’s a straightforward guide on how to clean your baize without damaging it.

1️⃣ Dry Brush First
Use a soft clothes brush or a clean, dry paintbrush to gently sweep away dust and crumbs. Brush in one direction, following the nap of the baize rather than against it. This helps prevent fuzzing and keeps the fibres aligned.
2️⃣ Hoover with Care
Use your hoover’s upholstery attachment on its lowest setting to remove smaller bits. Keep the nozzle just above the surface if your hoover is strong, or lightly touch it if it’s gentle. Again, hoover in the same direction each time.

3️⃣ Dealing with Spills
If you spill tea, beer, or squash (it happens!), act quickly:
- Blot the liquid immediately with kitchen roll or a clean, dry cloth.
- Avoid rubbing, as this will push the liquid deeper into the fibres.
- If needed, use a slightly damp cloth with cold water to blot again, then dry with a towel by pressing down gently.
4️⃣ Removing Stains
For light stains, a cloth lightly dampened with cold water and a drop of mild washing-up liquid can help, but don’t soak the baize. Always test a small hidden area first.
Avoid harsh cleaners, bleach, or scrubbing, as these can damage the colour and texture of the baize.
5️⃣ Keeping it Fresh
- Cover your table when not in use to prevent dust and pet hair.
- Avoid placing heavy or sharp objects on the baize to prevent dents or tears.
- Keep food and drinks away if possible, or use coasters and be mindful of spills.
Final Thoughts
Baize doesn’t need complicated cleaning – gentle, regular care is best. If your baize gets heavily stained or worn over time, it may be worth having it re-covered to keep your table looking its best.
