In a recent conversation on Your Green Breakfast with Xan Phillips on Voice FM, Stuart shared how his passion for reducing waste sparked the creation of Robert Rose Carpentry — a family-run business built on sustainability, craftsmanship, and creativity.
For those who didn’t hear the conversation, check out the podcast and a summary below.
If you are wondering what items were being talked about, below are some of the pieces mentioned in the interview, with images for each type.
A New Life for Old Wood
The idea began when Stuart noticed the huge amount of perfectly usable wood being discarded from his family’s scaffolding business. Once the boards were deemed unsafe for construction sites, they were often sent to landfill or burnt — even though much of the timber still had years of life left in it.
Seeing this, Stuart was determined to find a better way.
By rescuing these boards and giving them new purpose, he began transforming what others saw as waste into beautiful, long-lasting furniture. Each piece of wood goes through a careful process of cutting, sanding, and filling imperfections to highlight its natural character and story.
Today, the company estimates it saves 90–95% of wood that would otherwise have gone to waste — turning reclaimed materials into something both sustainable and stylish.
Handcrafted, Custom-Made Furniture
Robert Rose Carpentry started gaining attention during lockdown, when bespoke home desks became one of their first success stories. Since then, the workshop has grown to offer a wide range of made-to-order pieces, tailored to each customer’s size, colour, and design preferences.
Below are some of the most popular creations — each crafted from reclaimed scaffolding boards and designed to blend function with rustic charm.
Adjustable Room Dividers

One of the most innovative pieces in the collection, these adjustable room dividers use tension to fit securely between the floor and ceiling — no drilling or permanent installation required.
They’re ideal for renters, home offices, and open-plan spaces, offering privacy and flexibility while keeping your space beautifully styled.
Gaming Tables

A favourite among tabletop enthusiasts, the gaming tables feature a removable top, transforming effortlessly between dining and gaming modes.
You can pause a game like Dungeons & Dragons, replace the top, and enjoy dinner — with everything safely stored underneath until the next session.
Desks & Workstations

Born from the early lockdown days, reclaimed wood desks remain one of Robert Rose Carpentry’s signature products.
Each piece is built to order, with customisable dimensions, finishes, and leg options — a perfect balance of durability, sustainability, and handcrafted charm.
A Sustainable Mission
What started as a personal effort to stop wood waste has grown into a thriving example of eco-conscious British craftsmanship.
By breathing new life into discarded materials, Robert Rose Carpentry shows that sustainability and style can go hand in hand — one handcrafted piece at a time.
