The right dining table fits your room, your chairs and the way you use it. Measure the seating arrangement as well as the tabletop before ordering a reclaimed wood table or matching bench.

THE STOCKHOLM: compare the bench length with the space between the table legs.

Start with the available floor space

Measure the dining area and note doors, radiators, sideboards and access routes. Mark the proposed tabletop footprint with tape. Pull out your actual chairs, sit down and walk around them to check the space you need. Check the full extended length if choosing an extendable table.

How many people will fit?

A seating number is only a guide. Chair width, arms, leg positions and place settings change the practical capacity. Measure your chairs and set out place settings on an existing surface. Check that each person has space for their knees and that the table supports do not obstruct their seat.

Choose a bench to suit the table

Check the bench height against the tabletop and underside clearance. Compare the bench length with the clear distance between the table legs if you want it to tuck away. A bench shorter than the tabletop may still be too long to fit between the supports. Confirm whether your chosen product option includes a bench, rather than relying on the photograph.

Rectangular, hexagonal and patterned designs

A rectangular table gives a straightforward footprint; a hexagonal design needs checking at its widest points and at every seating position. Patterned reclaimed wood tops retain natural variation between boards. Compare the complete dimensions and arrangement rather than choosing from the product name alone.

Extendable tables

Record the closed and extended length. Check where the extension section stores and allow room to operate the mechanism. The Mitre design stores its extension section underneath; confirm the dimensions of your selected option before ordering.
