Start with your actual mattress and bed base when choosing a reclaimed wood bed or headboard. A mattress size describes the sleeping surface; it does not necessarily describe the overall furniture footprint.

CARDIFF reclaimed wood headboard with timber legs
THE CARDIFF: agree the headboard width, height and fixing arrangement for your bed.

Measure your mattress and existing base

Record the mattress width, length and thickness in centimetres. Check the manufacturer’s dimensions as well as your own measurements. For a headboard fitted to an existing divan, measure the base width, fixing positions and available attachment points. Send photographs if the fittings are unclear.

Check the whole bed footprint

Ask for the overall frame width and length, including posts and headboard. Mark the footprint on the floor, allow space for doors and drawers, and check walking access on both sides. Tell us about skirting boards or a sloping ceiling that may affect the headboard position.

THE DOUGLAS: measure the full bed-frame footprint as well as the mattress.

Choose your headboard width and height

Decide whether the headboard should align with the bed or extend beyond it. Measure the visible height above your mattress as well as the total height from the floor. Include bedside tables and wall sockets in your sketch.

Confirm the fixing arrangement

Freestanding, bed-mounted and wall-mounted headboards have different fitting requirements. Do not assume the photographed arrangement will fit your existing base. The Cardiff listing includes legs but excludes bed-base fixing screws; confirm the appropriate fixings for your base before ordering. For other designs, ask what is supplied and what must be arranged separately.

Raised beds and combined desks

A raised sleeping area needs separate checks for the intended user, mattress thickness, guardrails, access, ceiling clearance, loading and installation. Agree the complete specification and safety instructions before ordering. Follow the supplied assembly guidance and do not use the bed until properly assembled.

Choose your timber finish

Reclaimed timber has grain, knots and colour variation. Compare our finish guide and ask about samples when matching existing furniture.
